Dash For The Beads…and for FIDO!

The 3rd Annual Dash for the Beads will continue the tradition of supporting the beautification of the Oak Cliff area.  Dash for the Beads will consist of a 5K run, 1 mile walk, and costume contest on the morning of Saturday, February 18, 2012 in the Bishop Arts District in north Oak Cliff.

This will be an outrageous and exciting event that you will not want to miss!  It is dog, stroller, and family friendly!  Registration begins November 1st! All proceeds from the 2012 Dash for the Beads event shall go towards FIDO Oak Cliff and their efforts to establish north Oak Cliff’s 1st dog park!

This is exciting news after the recent and very successful FIDO Fest, which was sponsored by Winnetka Heights.  The dog centric festival, which occurred on grounds within Winnetka Heights, served as a pilot test to evaluate the site as a permanent location. Located at N. Clinton and the Jefferson – Twelfth connector, this site has trees, seating, an irrigation system, and support from the neighborhood, who conducts quarterly cleanups of the site.

FIDO OC is in the process of collecting surveys from nearby neighborhoods to determine interest and support for a local dog park. Over 60 surveys were passed out to attendees at FIDO Fest, with results yielding overwhelming support for a dog park – and a lot of excitement around the Winnetka Heights location. “Each day when I walk my dog I meet new dog owners.  There is a lot of support for a local dog park – it’s just an effort that needed a group to make it happen,” says Robbie Good, a FIDO OC founder and the group’s graphic artist and webmaster.

FIDO OC’s mission is to improve quality of life for Oak Cliff dogs and their owners. Their number one objective is to create a local, community oriented dog park – unlike the destination mega-parks that are being built by the City of Dallas.  “We intend for these parks to be used by local Cliffdwellers, with many coming by foot.  It will be local gathering place, where residents can connect and build a sense of community,” says Michael Reagan, one of the group’s founders.
